Never lose hope

"I believe everyone can grow stronger even if life has beaten you down. I know because I have seen it time and time again in my office with people just like you. It is a great honor to watch someone gather their courage and learn to live life fully." ~Traci W. Pirri

Depression hurts.

Are people always telling you to smile? Do you feel numb and exhausted inside even if you do put on a smile for the world? Does life feel like it will never get better? Do you sometimes think everyone would be better off without you? If depression is weighing you down, it can feel like you have no options. You might feel helpless, stuck, alone and hopeless. Depression counseling gives you a safe, warm place to explore these feelings. Many people find that friends and family members start to feel weighed down by their ongoing low mood. But this is exactly what therapy is for. You can unload and say the things that would shock everyone else.

Depression is more common than most people think. In fact, it has been called the "hidden illness,” by Jeremy Coplan, MD, professor of psychiatry at SUNY Downstate in New York because so many people put on a "happy mask" but inside feel exhausted and alone suffering from symptoms of depression.

These symptoms include things like depressed mood, lack of interest in things they normally enjoy, weight changes, low energy, suicidal thoughts, sleep problems, and trouble concentrating, among others. Many people have aches and pains associated with depression. You might find yourself doing things that you don't normally do. You might look in the mirror and have trouble recognizing yourself. Often, depression causes people to isolate. They struggle to maintain relationships because the effort to do things becomes so overwhelming.

Depression Counseling works.

The National Network of Depression Centers says 80% of those treated for depression start to feel better within the first four to six weeks of starting treatment. Medications have similar results, but often result in the depression coming back. You see, drugs treat the symptoms, not the source. Depression counseling, however, digs into the real reasons behind the depressed symptoms. It helps you start to see yourself in a more positive, helpful way. You learn the skills to manage your mood throughout your lifetime. Depression counseling heals wounds caused by negative events.

Our sessions will focus on evoking real, positive change in your life. Individual therapy is a journey with a beginning, middle, and end. So, it won't last forever. Some people really do like therapy and can do it forever. But the rest of us want something that helps ease our pain so we can get on with our lives. Let's face it. Counseling is an investment in time and money. More importantly, though, it is an investment in you. It is meant to help you change your life for the better. So, that means you should actually be able to see it is working! If not, we will work together to dig deeper, think outside the box, and find something that helps.

What can you expect from Depression Counseling?

My practice is built on finding your strengths and building on them. Together, we will move you towards a life that is more present, serene, and whole. I offer treatment options that have been proven to work. I especially like digging into the complicated stuff from the past and broken relationships. Of course, this is only once you are ready.

At the beginning, you may feel like you are falling apart. You can't maintain your current responsibilities, much less tackle the really hard parts of your life. Therefore, the beginning of therapy is about building skills so you can handle your life and doing the harder therapeutic work. All of this happens within our own therapist-client relationship. As I earn your trust, you will feel more comfortable and be able to make more progress.

I use proven therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems and Motivational Interviewing, just to name a few. All of these have been shown in research studies to really treat depression. I am dedicated to finding something that works for you. Whatever modality we choose, the goal is always to strengthen your relationships and life worth living.

Think you don't have time for counseling?

Maybe you find yourself surrounded by people who rely on you. You can't find time to get your hair cut, much less fit in therapy. How can you possibly make it all work? Absolutely, counseling is an investment in you, in your relationships, and in your future. It can take some commitment at first. However, the benefits start making the rest of your life work so much better that it feels worth it very quickly.

I offer convenient online scheduling. We can have a regular, set time, or we can change it week to week based on your schedule. Additionally, I offer online counseling that is secure and as simple to use as this website. My clients frequently tell me that their counseling sessions are the best investment they have ever made. And as their depression symptoms lower, they have more energy, think more clearly, and feel more clear about what is really important to them.

I truly have never heard someone say, "Man! What a waste of time it was investing in myself. I could have done so many other important things with my time." Instead, I hear all the time, "Wow! I wish I'd done this years ago."

Why choose me?

Honestly, I am not interested in working with just anyone. Finding a therapist is a little like dating. I could be great on paper, and if you aren't feeling it, then you would be better off working with someone else. My goal is for you to get your needs met. So, if that is best done through a referral, I'm happy to help.

But, if you feel like you are ready to roll your sleeves up and get to work, I'm happy you are here. I recommend scrolling through my website, which was 100% designed by me. This is a great way to get to know me before you ever make an appointment. You can read my blog posts and get a sense of how I approach therapy. Also, we can schedule a free 15-minute telephone call. And if you have any questions, just let me know. I look forward to starting our journey together!
